The beams, flagstones, mullioned windows, oak doors and Palladian front of Compton House are largely unchanged since the 16th century, making this unique country house hotel one of considerable architectural interest.

With its five delightfully appointed bedrooms and private dining facilities specialising in local cuisine, Compton House offers something for everyone - whether it's just the 2 of you or a gathering of 30.

The 18th century Drawing Room, with its elegant detailed plaster egg and dart mouldings, was designed by architect Thomas Prowse. Under the fireplace mantle lies the head of Ceres, classical goddess of the Harvest. An elegant panelled lobby leads to the 17th century Dining Room, refurbished in the 18th century with solid oak floors.

A crinoline staircase leads to the upper floors where the Panel Room boasts a 16th century frieze of grotesques and cherubs. As well as a panelled four-poster bed, the Elizabethan Room has a fireplace dating back to 1587.

The south door, leading to the garden terrace, has scratched onto a pane of glass the names of past residents, including W. Fry 1767; Great, Great, Great Grandfather to Christopher Fry, the author and playwright
