Axbridge     |     Somerset

The beautiful county of Somerset is sometimes overlooked but it has much to offer the visitor. Axbridge is an ideal centre from which to explore. Close to Cheddar with its caves and gorge and nestling between the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels, Axbridge is only 10 miles from the sea and from historic Wells and from Glastonbury. Bath and Bristol for shopping and theatre trips are only a little further away. Close too are good road (M5) and rail links to the rest of the UK and air links to America and much of Europe.

Walking, caving, cycling, riding, stalking, golfing, ballooning and a whole range of action activities; theatre outings to Bath or Bristol.....or just relaxing - all are possible at Compton House.

Below are just a few ideas.

Walking – or riding or cycling – are favourite pastimes in this part of Somerset and it is no surprise. Whether it is a leisurely stroll around the reservoir or a more energetic expedition into the Mendip Hills, the scenery, flora and fauna are a delight at any time of the year. And you can always plan your route to pass a good pub at lunchtime before arriving back at Compton House to rest and relax before dinner.

Cheddar Gorge is a special place – as are the Caves which are well worth a look. We run team-building activities with Cheddar Caving! Half way up the Gorge you can stop at Black Rock and either choose a strenuous climb which will eventually take you to the top of Jacob’s Ladder or you can select a more relaxed stroll along Velvet Bottom. The beautiful and historic City of Wells is justifiably famous for its cathedral. It is also a delightful and relaxed shopping centre with an active farmers’ market every Wednesday and Saturday (www.somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk)

Only a gentle 10 mile drive from Axbridge, Wells is a ‘must’ for the first-time visitor.

Glastonbury Tor is visible for miles around, often appearing into the sunlight above an early morning mist. Walk there from Glastonbury Abbey, with its rich early Christian heritage. Then return to explore the many off-beat shops that make the centre of Glastonbury so fascinating.

This is my morning walk on Shoot Shelve Hill but try some real stalking in the Blackdown Hills with Dave Samways and then return to the comfort of Compton House for a well earned rest, dinner and, perhaps a wee dram upon which to retire! www.thedeermanager.com
